I am doing my usual double linky with Teaching Maddeness and Doodle Bugs Teaching and sharing about our week in Room 29.
Monday was our 100th Day of School. You can see what we did HERE. Had to share my pic again, 'cause it's adorable. :)
Monday was also the start of our March is Reading Month activities. This year our theme is Story Laboratory: Experiment with a Good Book. We had a kick off assembly led by our Principal. He was trying to design the perfect book. Each grade level team had to tell 3 clues as to what their book was and the kids tried to guess.
Can you tell what 2nd grade's was?
Clue 1: Hola Dudes! Our book is about a kitty boy with a sassy mommy and 3 equally sassy sisters.
Clue 2: This kitty boy likes to bounce, Bounce, BOUNCE on his big boy bed... and once or 6 times he lands on his head.
Clue 3: His ears are to beeeg for heeees head. And heees head eees to big for heees body. He is not a Siamese Cat. He is a Chihuahua!
If you guessed Skippy Jon Jones then you are correct....and if you didn't then you must not teach a younger grade. LOL!
This is our principal as his alter ego Dr. Schroederstein. They had dry ice going in the bowl in the middle of the table and we added colored potions to the bowl when we read our clues. There were sound effects as we added them too. It was SO cool!
We are working on finishing up our research report writing unit. And I am working on putting the finishing touches on the organizers we used/ are using for sale on TPT. Fingers crossed I can get it done this weekend!
I changed this page a little and got rid of the bubble strips in the middle. They were cute but kind of cluttered up the page.
Today we started working on our fraction sundaes for the work we love board. I love, love, love this project and always will. It is one of the first things I purchased on TPT when I started using that site last year. I cant wait until they are all done and put on the "Whale Done Work" board. If you love it you can purchase a copy from Amy Lemons ( LOVE HER!) HERE.
The last thing I am going to leave you with is a picture of one of my peanuts reading to the class. This year they started something that makes me kick myself for not starting myself and that I want to keep going for years to come. One day one of them brought in a book from home and asked if she could read it out loud to the class. I said sure. (I mean how do you say no to a request like that?!) And suddenly I had 5 or 6 kiddo's asking if they could do the same.
I LOVE it! I love that they want to read to each other and that this is something they started all on their own. We may not always have time for it the day they ask ,but I try to get to it within a day or two. I think next year I will do it on a rotation, so that whoever is my right hand for the week will have the option of bringing in a book from home to read to the class.
I love these guys. :)
Well, that is all from me. Link up and have a FABULOUS weekend!
Goodness, I just love that they want to read to each other like that! We didn't have a full week this week and it still seemed a little long to me! Must be spring peeking around the corner! LOVE your 100th day frame, as well as your principal's alter ego!
ReplyDeleteMC from www.fun-a-day.com :)
Thanks Mary! He really is a good sport...In September he dressed up as a ladybug. We were helping to set a world record for reading the book about Ladybug and the Bug Squad. ( Cant remember the exact name). Thanks for stopping by. :)

That is so sweet that your kiddos want to read to the class! And I love how your principal dressed up! How cool is that for the kids to see!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sooooo OVER Skippyjon Jones! Maybe b/c Sly makes me read it to him every.single.night. The hubs refuses, and I must say, I have a killer Spanish acceeeent!

Hippo Hooray for Second Grade!
WHAT?! How could you not love to read SkippyJon Jones ever.night....I know, the same way that I almost cried with happiness when I saw they had a new Pinkalicious book ( Emeraldlicios) so that I would have a break from the pink, purple, silver, and gold! LOL!
DeleteI saw a pin on pinterest about duct taping your principal to the wall as a reward for reading a certain amount....wonder if he would go for that? ;) HAHA!
Jean
Aww, I love that they want to read to each other! How fun!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this is your first 5 day week! Is it because of snow days? Do you have to make them up?
Amanda
Collaboration Cuties
I do too! It is especially cute when they "teacher talk"..." ok, now this is my favorite page...or I love this word choice" It makes my day!
DeleteAnd yes, we have had 12 snow days so far this year...I say so far because it's MI...the weather can literally go from sunny and warm to snowing to raining all in one day. But between the snow days and scheduled days off we have not had a full week of school for 3 months...and yes, we will have to make up 2-3 of them. :(
Thanks for checking out my blog! I love your photo frame for the 100th day of school! I will have to pin that idea for next year! My kids LOVE to read to each other too! We are still working on our "good audience" skills... so it is hard to have everyone share their books all the time. I purchased the ice cream fractions too! My kiddos love that activity! LOVE how second grade teachers think alike! :)

The Applicious Teacher
Thanks Leigh! Pin away! :)
DeleteIt took a looooooooooooooooong time to get them to the point where they could sit and listen to a classmate read...and its not perfect. This book was particularly funny and really got them going. So we had to have several reminders about what it means to be a good listener.
Jean
I love that they are reading to the class! And that they were inspired to do so on their own. My students love to read to each other in partners around the room. So fun!

All the Dots
I love to see them reading out loud to each other too. :)Thanks for stopping by Heather.

It is amazing how hard it can be to get back into the swing of a full week!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the Reading Month activities! That is fantastic!
Enjoy your weekend!

Suntans and Lesson Plans
You're telling me! On Tuesday morning I almost thought about taking a personal day for Thursday or Friday. LOL! The reading month committee always does a nice job at my school. It's one of those things I always intend to join but have a million things going on come sign up time.
DeleteI think I would die if my principal dressed up like that! :) I love the fraction sundae - I did that with my class last year and they loved it. Actually they love any craft activity from Amy Lemons!
ReplyDeleteGotta love a principal who is willing to make themselves silly to motivate kids. I like Amy's Shark acrostic too. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteWhat a fun week! My kiddos love to read to each other, too! That and "calendar leader" are the top coupon picks in our class. I love that they like "being the teacher." :)
